Flex vs Force

There are 2 basic approaches to strategic problem solving: flex and force.

Flex—Discovering the path forward by exploring the situation, reframing problems, and testing potential solutions.

Force—Trying to predict what the path forward will look like, and committing to a pre-determined set of actions and solutions.

With the force approach, you decide ahead of time how things should be. And when reality (inevitably) doesn’t match your expectations, you grind and hustle and try to bend the world to your whims.

But in a complex and unpredictable world, good strategy requires the humility to admit that we can’t predict the future, and the willingness to align vision with reality.
